The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has clarified the absence of India’s flag at Karachi’s National Stadium after a viral video sparked controversy just days before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

A social media video on Sunday showed flags of all competing nations except India being hoisted at the stadium, leading to speculation that the omission was a retaliatory move by PCB.

India is set to play all its Champions Trophy matches in Dubai, having opted out of travelling to Pakistan due to government restrictions. However, PCB has confirmed that the decision was not theirs but a directive from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

"The ICC has advised that only four flags will be hoisted on Champions Trophy 2025 match days – ICC (Event Authority), PCB (Event Host), and the two sides competing on that day. Simple," a PCB spokesperson said.

The Champions Trophy will begin on Wednesday, with hosts Pakistan facing New Zealand in Karachi. India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh are placed in Group A, with India kicking off their campaign against Bangladesh on Thursday in Dubai.

The much-anticipated Pakistan-India clash is scheduled for Sunday, February 23, at the Dubai International Stadium.

Group B, regarded as the “group of death,” consists of England, Australia, South Africa, and Afghanistan. One of cricket’s fiercest rivalries will unfold in Lahore when Australia faces England on Saturday, February 22.

The semi-finals are set for March 4 and 5, while the final will be played on March 9.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed satisfaction over the agreement that allowed Pakistan to retain hosting rights while India plays its matches in Dubai.

"We are pleased that an agreement has been reached based on the principles of equality and respect, showcasing the spirit of cooperation and collaboration that defines our sport," Naqvi said.

He also acknowledged the role of ICC members in reaching a compromise.

"Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the ICC members who played a constructive role in helping us achieve a mutually beneficial solution. Their efforts have been invaluable in promoting the interests of international cricket," he added.

Despite the initial controversy, the focus now shifts to the highly anticipated tournament, where cricket’s biggest names will battle for the title.
