Meret Schneider, a Swiss National Council member from the Green Party, recently criticized Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) as a “threat to democracy,” suggesting it should be banned in Switzerland.
Schneider, an outspoken vegan activist, claims that the platform promotes conservative viewpoints, which she argues poses a risk to democratic values.

She wants to ban X in Switzerland, saying it may be a "threat to democracy" and that it promotes conservatives.
What is your response? pic.twitter.com/7SXY3pV6Vq
Schneider is an active advocate for reducing meat consumption in Switzerland and is the co-manager of Sentience Politics, an organization focused on animal rights. Her political career includes serving as a municipal council member in Uster from 2014 to 2019, followed by a role in the Cantonal Council of Zurich. She was elected to the National Council in 2019, returned in December 2024 after a brief break, and is also a prominent member of the Green Party.

While her opinion on X/social media is dangerous & misguided, she is actually a good person (active in environmental concerns and animal rescue) who sadly suffers from anorexia. She has spoken… pic.twitter.com/mmMaNoU5PK
The 32-year-old has been candid about her personal struggle with anorexia, a disorder that she has openly discussed. Some of Musk’s supporters have criticized her, attempting to link her vegan advocacy to her health condition. However, Schneider has remained steadfast in her beliefs on both social and political matters.
Schneider’s call to ban X has sparked a wider debate about the influence of social media on political discourse, free speech, and platform moderation.
