Unilever Pakistan, in collaboration with the Express Media Group, recently organised an insightful session titled “Essential Skills for the New Age” at Habib University.
The event, aimed at helping students understand the competencies required for success in the rapidly evolving digital landscape, brought together industry leaders and experts.
The session featured a panel of prominent speakers, including Ammar Hassan, Founder and CEO of Bypass; Javed Jafri, Media, Digital, and Data Lead at Unilever; and Faisal Sheikh, Co-founder and CCO of Jack of Digital.
These experts shared valuable advice on professional growth, problem-solving, self-improvement, and navigating new challenges in the modern workforce.
Ammar Hassan highlighted the importance of self-confidence and effective expression, encouraging students to embrace self-learning, follow thought leaders, and specialise in their areas of interest. “To stand out in today’s competitive industries, students need to focus on developing their unique skills,” he said.
Javed Jafri from Unilever stressed the significance of critical thinking and self-learning. He advised students to identify their passions and enhance their analytical skills to solve real-world problems.
“Social skills are just as important as academic achievements,” he noted.
Faisal Sheikh of Jack of Digital shared practical insights on progressive learning and the importance of mentorship. He also emphasised that career choices should align with an individual’s skills, rather than academic degrees.
“The internet offers abundant information, but students need to develop the ability to think critically and connect the dots,” he said.
Maryam, Talent, Learning, and Organisation Manager at Unilever, spoke about the company’s Reimagine Talent Generation for Pakistan campaign, which aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
“We are focused on enhancing students’ competencies, both personal and professional, to prepare them for corporate roles and entrepreneurship,” she said. The campaign plans to host five sessions across universities to equip students with the skills that align with corporate needs.
Express Media Group’s Executive Director, Azfar Nizami, emphasised the importance of identifying one’s interests and aligning education with future career goals. He noted that Express Media’s platform, with a reach of 40 million users, would play a vital role in spreading awareness about new-age skills.
The session was praised by students who saw it as a valuable opportunity to gain insights from industry experts.
Many appreciated the initiative by Unilever and Express Media Group, recognising it as a step towards preparing them for the challenges of the new age.
With the successful conclusion of the first session, the initiative promises to inspire and empower students across the country, equipping them with the essential skills required to thrive in an ever-changing world.
