ISLAMABAD:

Chairperson of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Farzana Naek met with Prime Minister's Coordinator on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam on Tuesday to discuss collaborative efforts in climate risk mitigation, environmental conservation, and youth engagement in resilience-building activities, according to a press statement.

During the meeting, both sides stressed the urgency of climate action and emphasised the need for collaborative efforts among various stakeholders to safeguard communities against the increasing impacts of climate change and fostering green initiatives. They also discussed expanding green initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability.

Alam highlighted the pivotal role of tree plantation drives in combating climate change, improving air quality, and preventing soil erosion. She stated that the government has prioritised increasing tree cover as a key element of its environmental sustainability agenda. "Trees are not only our natural allies in the fight against climate change but also essential for the long-term health and safety of our communities," she remarked.

She underscored the importance of public awareness regarding forest conservation. "Planting trees and restoring forests can significantly reduce the harmful impacts of climate change, such as floods and droughts, while also providing vital ecosystem services," she said.

"Pakistan has a rich biodiversity, and by taking action to conserve and protect our forests, we can not only mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change but also enhance the resilience of local communities, ensuring a sustainable future for the generations to come," she stated. Naek and Alam agreed on enhancing cooperation to expand environmental sustainability efforts, particularly focusing on increasing forest cover and engaging youth in climate resilience activities.
