Super Bowl LIX turned out to be a night to forget for Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. His team's hopes for a historic third consecutive championship were crushed in a 40-22 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles. But beyond the loss on the field, Kelce also had to witness his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, get booed by the crowd at New Orleans' Superdome.
According to the Daily Mail, Kelce was deeply affected by the moment. "Travis was aware of Taylor getting booed and he felt helpless," a source told the outlet. "Seeing the look on her face got to him."
Swift, who had been in a suite with friends and Kelce's family, appeared unfazed by the reaction. But the Daily Mail's source claimed the moment stung for Kelce, who is known to be a protective partner. "He always protects her and it broke his heart," the source said. "He was already having a tough night and the fact that the stadium was predominantly Eagles fans didn't help. Travis knows that this hurt her and anyone can see this."
Some Eagles fans reportedly viewed Swift's support for Kelce as a betrayal, given her Pennsylvania roots and past allegiance to their team. "They feel she is a traitor of sorts - being from Pennsylvania and even wearing Eagles gear prior to dating [Kelce]," the source suggested.
Adding to the drama, US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to comment on Swift's reception at the game. "The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got booed out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!" he posted.
Trump also criticised the Super Bowl's kickoff procedure, calling it "the worst part" of the night.
Despite the momentary boos, Swift had a strong support system in her box, joined by Ice Spice, the Haim sisters, and Kelce's parents, among others. Tennis legend Serena Williams defended her on social media, writing on X, "I love you, Taylor Swift. Don't listen to those boos!"
The night ended in disappointment for Kelce and the Chiefs, but according to the Daily Mail's source, the tight end is taking solace in his relationship. "Even though this is not a happy ending to the season, having her love gives him so much joy."
Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar's halftime show - featuring SZA, Samuel L Jackson, Serena Williams, and Mustard - paid homage to Compton, adding to a Super Bowl night that was as eventful off the field as it was on it.
