Mayor Khalid Kamau, also known as Mayor Kobi, of South Fulton, Georgia, is under investigation for allegedly misusing tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars. He is accused of using city funds for luxury trips and lavish office perks while categorizing the expenses as “economic development.”
According to The Shade Room’s Justin Carter, city policy restricts the mayor from exceeding $10,000 per month on the city credit card. However, records show that in 2024, Mayor Kobi allegedly spent $1,000 on a trip to Paris and brought a staff member along, which is against city policy. Additional expenses followed, including over $9,800 in September and another $13,000 in October, bringing his total reported spending to over $26,000.
These revelations sparked heated discussions at a recent South Fulton city council meeting, where members pressed the mayor to address the allegations. Mayor Kobi, however, dismissed the claims, suggesting that they were part of an internal conflict among the all-Black city council, accusing them of “tearing each other down.” He also described the meeting as an act of “political posturing.”
Council member and commissioner Helen Willis refuted Kobi’s claims, emphasizing that he was not a “victim” and needed to be held accountable for his actions.
Residents of South Fulton have reacted with concern over the allegations, and the ongoing investigation aims to determine whether the mayor violated city policies. It remains unclear what consequences he may face if found guilty of financial misconduct.
