Former Pakistan cricket captain and renowned batsman Younis Khan has expressed hope that the national team will make it to the semi-finals of the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Speaking to the media, Khan emphasised the importance of supporting the team and avoiding unnecessary criticism, which can create pressure on players.
Younis Khan stated, “The team selected for the mega event deserves full support. Unwarranted criticism puts players under pressure. Pakistan’s cricket team consists of the best available players, and they have the capability to secure a place among the top four teams in the Champions Trophy.”
He highlighted the mental fitness required for players to perform well, adding that senior batsman Fakhar Zaman could play a key role in leading Pakistan to victory with memorable innings.
"The team is well-balanced with key players like Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan in the batting line-up, and fast bowlers like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah in the bowling department."
Younis Khan also expressed regret over the injury of young talent, Saeem Ayub, noting that Pakistan would miss out on his skills in the mega event. He further pointed out that criticism on team selection often begins before major tournaments like the World Cup or Champions Trophy, which increases pressure on the selected players.
He explained, "No player selects themselves for the team; the selectors choose players based on their performance. It is important that the chosen team receives full support and is not unnecessarily pressurised, especially with the changes made to the squad before previous events due to excessive criticism."
Younis Khan also stressed the need for grassroots development and promoting new talent. He suggested that with limited opportunities in club cricket, more focus should be placed on school and college-level sports to bring new players to the forefront.
On a personal note, Younis Khan expressed gratitude towards the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for naming an enclosure at the National Stadium after him. He humbly stated, “It was a privilege to serve Pakistan, and players like me did not do a favour by serving our country. Our records are out there for everyone to see.”
In a light-hearted remark, Khan offered his services to strengthen Pakistan’s batting line-up, saying, “I’m ready to serve Pakistan again if needed.”
