Theatre in Punjab was once a revered platform for artistic expression and cultural storytelling. It has deteriorated into a spectacle of cheap entertainment overshadowed by crude and obscene dances that serve little purpose beyond commercial gain. In response, the Punjab government has decided to impose a lifetime ban on actors - particularly women dancers - found guilty of promoting vulgarity and revoke the licences of theatres that continue to host such performances.
This decision, though drastic, stems from longstanding concerns that Punjab's theatre industry has suffered under the weight of commercialisation. Instead of engaging narratives and powerful performances, theatre halls have become hubs of lewd comedy and suggestive dance sequences, aimed solely at drawing crowds. The shift from meaningful storytelling to vulgarity has not only diminished the industry's credibility but has also alienated audiences seeking quality entertainment. However, while the government's crackdown is understandable, its singular focus on women dancers raises concerns. The decline of theatre is not the fault of performers alone but a collective failure of writers, directors, producers and audiences who have allowed artistic standards to erode. The decision is also not without precedent. Over the years, authorities have repeatedly attempted to curb the deteriorating standards of commercial theatre, but enforcement has remained lax. If the government truly wants to reform the industry, it must introduce comprehensive policies that encourage high-quality productions rather than merely penalising individuals.
The promise of new legislation supporting family-oriented plays is a step in the right direction, but it must be followed by tangible action. Theatre owners should be incentivised to promote meaningful performances, and regulatory measures should be clear yet balanced to ensure creativity is not stifled. The government has long contemplated such reforms, but little has changed. This time, it must follow through to restore theatre's lost dignity.
