Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman will officially end with its upcoming second season, set for release in 2025. The decision to wrap the series was reportedly made before recent sexual misconduct accusations against Gaiman, but the controversy has overshadowed the announcement.

Showrunner Allan Heinberg confirmed the news, stating, “‘The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story… we knew we only had enough story for one more season.” Sources indicate that production, which began in summer 2023, was already set to conclude the adaptation earlier than fans expected.

The accusations against Gaiman surfaced in a July 2024 Tortoise Media podcast, leading to his departure from Amazon’s Good Omens and the shelving of The Graveyard Book film at Disney. Dark Horse Comics also cut ties with the author, and a planned Coraline musical was canceled. Despite the controversy, Netflix has not commented on the allegations.

Season 2 of The Sandman will adapt the Season of Mists storyline, in which Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) abdicates control of Hell, forcing Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) to decide its fate. New cast members include Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Adrian Lester as Destiny, and Jack Gleeson as Puck, while key actors from Season 1 will return.
