Reese Witherspoon shared that a well-known actress ended their friendship after she delivered an awkward speech in the star’s honor.

"It literally haunts me," the *Legally Blonde* actress told her *You’re Cordially Invited* co-star Will Ferrell in a joint interview with *People* published Thursday.

She explained that the actress, who was not a close friend but a well-respected performer, had asked her to present an award.

However, Witherspoon, 48, had never attended that particular awards ceremony before and mistakenly assumed it was meant to be lighthearted.

"So I got up and I roasted her," she recalled.

The Oscar winner soon realized she had misjudged the event’s tone.

"The tone was British and elegant and classy," she explained. "And I was like, 'Remember the time we got laser hair removal?!'"

Thinking back on the moment, Witherspoon laughed but admitted she is still embarrassed by the situation.

While she now finds humor in the misstep, her former friend did not share the sentiment.

"We're not friends anymore. I'm not even kidding — we're not friends anymore. I think she doesn’t like me anymore," she said.

"I thought it was so funny, and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad. I'm not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh, well."

Witherspoon did not reveal the identity of the actress but said she learned a lesson from the experience.

During an appearance on *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon* on Wednesday, the *Morning Show* star discussed how she encourages her children—daughter Ava, 25, and sons Deacon, 21, and Tennessee, 12—to develop a good sense of humor.

Speaking to Jimmy Fallon, Witherspoon explained that she intentionally embarrasses her kids so they learn not to take things too seriously as adults.

"You are one of the coolest moms, I would say," the host told her. "Your kids gotta be proud of you, but also, you post things [online] that make you embarrassed. … I love that about you."

Witherspoon admitted that her kids don’t always appreciate what she shares on social media, but she sees it as a positive thing.

"I think you should embarrass them enough that they’re funny later in life," the *Your Place or Mine* star joked—a lesson her former friend seemingly never embraced.
