The Joint Action Committee (JAC) announced on Thursday it would join Friday's (today) countrywide protests by Pakistan Federation Union of Journalists (PFUJ) against the latest amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act (Peca).
Despite the assurances of consultations with the stakeholders, the federal government bulldozed the controversial bill in the National Assembly and then got it approved from the Senate in haste, which speaks volume of government's ulterior motives and ill-intention, stated the journalist organisations in JAC – including PFUJ, PBA, CPNE, AEMEND and APNS.
Neither did the government, nor the National Assembly and the Senate made any consultations with the stakeholders, nor did the president met with journalists before assenting to the bill despite repeated JAC appeals, which was regrettable, they added.
JAC rejected the amendment bill outright and expressed its determination to put up a strong legal and public resistance against the law. The committee had started contacting civil society, lawyer organisations and other stakeholders, JAC stated. All journalist organisations in JAC would fully participate in the PFUJ's countrywide protests.
