LAHORE:

In a move to combat the rising homicide rate, Lahore Police has launched a Homicide Prevention Unit (HPU) under the supervision of DIG Operations Faisal Kamran.

The unit, led by SSP Operations, comprises an ADIG and six inspectors tasked with implementing data-driven strategies to prevent violent crimes before they occur.

The initiative follows growing concerns over law and order in Punjab, particularly after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed dissatisfaction with the rising number of homicides during a high-level meeting. She had specifically questioned the increase in murder cases across the province, including Lahore.

DIG Faisal Kamran said Lahore recorded 514 murder cases in 2024. A breakdown of these cases revealed that 104 murders were linked to longstanding enmities, 91 stemmed from sudden anger, and 69 resulted from neighbourhood disputes.

Other contributing factors included land conflicts, drug-related violence, and so-called honour killings.

Several high-profile murders in the past year have amplified concerns over law enforcement's effectiveness. Among them was the killing of Ameer Balaj Tipu during a wedding ceremony in Chung, which became a viral topic on social media, garnering national and international attention.

The subsequent murder of Javed Butt, the brother-in-law of Khawaja Tareef Gulshan alias Teefi Butt, who was accused of orchestrating Balaj's killing, further fueled debate over longstanding enmities and the role of police in either resolving or exacerbating such conflicts. The formation of the Homicide Prevention Unit comes amid a major shake-up in Punjab's police leadership.
