NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade has revealed that he underwent kidney surgery after doctors discovered a cancerous tumor during a routine checkup.
The 43-year-old former Miami Heat star shared his health battle for the first time on his podcast, The WY Network, on Thursday.
Wade disclosed that 40% of his right kidney was removed 13 months ago following a diagnosis that came after years of delaying a physical exam. Inspired by his father’s battle with prostate cancer, Wade finally visited a doctor after experiencing stomach cramps and urinary issues.
A full-body scan detected a tumor on his kidney, prompting specialists to recommend immediate surgery. Wade underwent the procedure on December 18, 2023, and post-surgical tests confirmed the tumor was cancerous. No further details have been provided about his current condition.
Reflecting on the experience, Wade described it as one of the most challenging moments of his life.
Despite the difficulties, the three-time NBA champion said the experience strengthened his family bonds and taught him the value of vulnerability.
Wade, who shares children with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches and wife Gabrielle Union, credited their unwavering support for helping him through recovery.
Encouraging others to prioritize their health, Wade emphasized the importance of early detection and medical checkups to prevent life-threatening conditions.
