Caroline Kennedy, cousin of the controversial health and human services secretary nominee Robert F Kennedy Jr, has written a damning letter to senators, urging them to block his confirmation. In the letter, she described him as a “predator” and warned of the dangers he could pose if elected to office.
“I have known Bobby my whole life. It’s no surprise that he keeps birds of prey as pets because he himself is a predator,” Kennedy wrote, alleging that his victims have included family members and parents of sick children.
The letter, sent ahead of Kennedy Jr’s confirmation hearing on Wednesday, accused him of financial hypocrisy. Caroline alleged that while publicly opposing vaccinations, he vaccinated his own children and financially benefited from his anti-vaccine activism. She also claimed he influenced other family members toward drug addiction.
Referencing her father, President John F Kennedy, and her uncle, former Attorney General Robert F Kennedy, Caroline said they would be “disgusted” by her cousin’s actions.
Though reluctant to publicly comment on family politics in the past, Caroline stated she felt an obligation to speak out given her cousin’s bid for secretary of health. The letter was shared on Instagram by her son, Jack Schlossberg, a writer.
This isn’t the first time Caroline, a former US ambassador to Australia, has criticized her cousin. After a speech at the National Press Club in Canberra, she labeled his anti-vaccine views as “dangerous.”
Robert F Kennedy Jr, a divisive choice by former President Donald Trump, has faced bipartisan criticism for his anti-vaccine stance. With a slim margin for confirmation, he can afford to lose no more than three Republican votes.
