Spain is set to implement a series of new tourism restrictions this year in response to growing anti-tourist sentiment that spread across Europe last summer.

Many locals in popular tourist destinations, particularly those frequented by UK holidaymakers, have expressed concerns about the impact of unregulated mass tourism on natural resources and the housing market.

Malaga, the capital of Costa del Sol, introduced measures last week to curb tourism and protect its historic centers. The city will ban the registration of holiday rentals in 43 districts, targeting properties rented out to tourists.

This move aims to reduce the growing number of rental properties in crowded districts, where they make up more than 8 percent of residential blocks. The rental registration suspension took effect on January 14.

In addition, Malaga is at the forefront of a new housing trend in Spain with the introduction of a senior cohousing project.

The town hall recently granted the first license for the construction of a senior cohousing development in Velez-Malaga. This initiative offers an alternative to traditional housing for older residents.

The ban in Malaga is expected to last three years, but it could be extended. Other cities in Spain, including Alicante and Madrid, have implemented similar measures in the past year, and Seville and other cities may follow suit.

Additionally, Spain's interior ministry has introduced a new requirement for more detailed personal information when registering for car rentals or hotel stays.

This includes bank card details, family relationships, and home addresses.

The measure, which took effect late last year, aims to help police track criminals but has been met with widespread criticism.
