The Chiefs’ narrow victory over Buffalo marks their fifth Super Bowl appearance in six years and puts them on the cusp of a historic NFL 'three-peat'. Kansas City are the first back-to-back champions to return to the championship game, having won three of the past five titles.
Patrick Mahomes, a two-time league MVP, once again outduelled Buffalo’s Josh Allen in a tense postseason encounter. The Bills, who last reached the Super Bowl in 1994, led 22-21 entering the fourth quarter but faltered on two key short-yardage plays.
Mahomes led the Chiefs on two crucial touchdown drives, adding a field goal that proved decisive. Buffalo’s final attempt to reclaim the lead fell short when tight end Dalton Kincaid was unable to secure Allen’s deep pass on fourth down.
Earlier, Mahomes scrambled for a touchdown and connected with Xavier Worthy for another, while Kareem Hunt opened Kansas City’s scoring. Buffalo responded with touchdowns from James Cook and Mack Hollins, but Allen’s late-game efforts could not prevent another postseason heartbreak.
Josh Allen could not hide his visible disappointment post-game.
In the NFC Championship, the Eagles delivered a commanding performance against the Commanders. Saquon Barkley, the league’s rushing leader, and quarterback Jalen Hurts each scored three rushing touchdowns.
Philadelphia capitalised on four Washington turnovers to set a Conference Championship record for points.
Washington, the sixth seed in the NFC, made a surprising playoff run led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, their defence could not contain the Eagles’ dominant ground game.
The Commanders narrowed the score to 34-23 in the third quarter after a Daniels rushing touchdown and two-point conversion, but their hopes faded following an Austin Ekeler fumble. Hurts and Barkley added late touchdowns to seal Philadelphia’s fifth Super Bowl appearance.
The Super Bowl 59 showdown between Kansas City and Philadelphia will be their second championship meeting in three years. Both teams will look to cement their legacy in New Orleans at the Caesers Superdome on 9 February.
