Anna-May Robey, a 22-year-old star from Love Island season 9, has shared her alarming experience of being stalked by an Uber driver who allegedly used her Instagram to track her down after a ride.
The incident, which took place in September 2024, left Robey feeling unsafe and violated.
Robey, traveling home from a night out with a friend in Manchester, described how the driver began acting "strangely" during the journey. After stopping the vehicle, the driver asked for her Instagram username, pulled over, and reportedly looked up her account. He then offered to refund the fare. "I think he must have seen my name when I booked it," Robey explained. "Then he asked me what my Instagram username was—he pulled over and looked at it."
The situation took an even more alarming turn when the driver allegedly called Robey about 20 minutes later, asking her to "come downstairs" because he had something for her. Initially assuming it was related to her Deliveroo order, Robey was startled to realize it was the same Uber driver. "I freaked out," she said. Although she played along with his request to go downstairs, she quickly hung up and blocked his number.
The unsettling experience led Robey to share her story on TikTok, where it gained significant attention. Many viewers voiced concerns about the potential breach of her privacy, with some suggesting that the driver’s actions violated data protection laws.
Uber responded, calling the incident "totally unacceptable" and assuring that an investigation was underway. A spokesperson for the company emphasized that all drivers are required to follow strict Community Guidelines, and those found in violation risk losing access to the app. The driver in question has since been blocked from accepting future rides with Robey.
Following the disturbing encounter, Robey has altered her approach to using Uber. "I try to avoid talking to drivers now and always travel with a friend," she said, underscoring the importance of safety precautions.
Uber’s safety team reached out to Robey after the incident and contacted the driver. According to the company, the driver claimed he had returned to Robey's apartment to return an earring she allegedly left behind. However, Robey firmly denied losing any jewelry in the car and called the driver’s explanation a "lie." "He was lying, and what were his intentions?" she questioned.
Although the driver has been blocked from further interactions with Robey, she expressed frustration that Uber did not take more serious action. "I don’t think he should have that job anymore," Robey said. "It can happen to anyone, and you just never know what the outcome could have been."
Robey’s TikTok video, which has gained considerable traction, also prompted others to share similar experiences with delivery drivers and ride-share services. She urges people to be cautious about the personal information they share and to prioritize safety by traveling with friends when possible.
"I would say be careful what you share, and if you can, get in an Uber with a friend," Robey advised. "It’s probably not even Uber, it’s the person. Some people will take advantage of young girls going out."
Uber has pledged to continue investigating the incident to ensure such situations do not occur again.
