Dasun Shanaka, the former Sri Lankan T20I captain, believes Pakistan is one of the top contenders for the upcoming Champions Trophy, especially with the tournament being played in home conditions.
In an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, Shanaka pointed out Pakistan's strengths and their ability to perform in front of their home crowd. "Pakistan will definitely give a tough fight to all the competing teams in the Champions Trophy," he said.
Shanaka, however, didn't rule out other teams like Australia, India, and England. "They are also top contenders; you cannot write them off," he said.
He also shared his admiration for two of Pakistan's standout cricketers, Fakhar Zaman and Azam Khan. Shanaka spoke about Fakhar's consistent performances and Azam's promising potential, both of whom are known for their explosive batting skills.
"Fakhar Zaman has proven time and again how good he is," Shanaka said. "He is a very talented player, and watching him play is always a treat," he added.
The Sri Lankan cricketer emphasized that the presence of such players in the ILT20 only adds value to the tournament. "It's great to see these top players from Pakistan in the league," he said.
Shanaka praises ILT20 in UAE
Shanaka shared his thoughts on the impact of the ILT20 on UAE cricket and its significance for international cricketers, especially as they prepare for major tournaments like the Champions Trophy. Shanaka, who is playing in his third ILT20 season, emphasized the importance of the league in providing young UAE cricketers with the opportunity to learn from international stars.
"The league has been amazing for cricketers, especially the young players from the UAE," Shanaka said.
"It's helping them improve and develop their skills, and the exposure to international cricketers is priceless," he added.
Shanaka, who has enjoyed his time with the Dubai Capitals, expressed gratitude for the support of players like David Warner and Sikandar Raza, who have been instrumental in creating a positive atmosphere in the camp. "Their experience is something that young players like me can learn from. It makes a huge difference to the team and the atmosphere around the camp," he said.
Looking ahead to the Champions Trophy, Shanaka noted how this tournament could benefit players in terms of preparation. "Dubai has been the home for Pakistan cricket, and playing in similar conditions will help players get ready for the Champions Trophy," he explained.
Shanaka concluded with optimism for the future, expressing his determination to deliver his best performance in the ILT20 and help his team, Dubai Capitals, secure the title this year. "My goal is to be the man of the series, and I am working hard to achieve that," he concluded.
