KARACHI:

The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA), protesting against the move to appoint bureaucrats as vice-chancellors, boycotted the teaching process in universities across Sindh, including the University of Karachi.

FAPUASA General Secretary Professor Nag Raj has said that the teaching process will remain suspended in universities across the province. The appointment of bureaucrat VCs in universities will not be acceptable, only experienced professors can understand academics. If the demands are not met in two days, they will surround the Sindh Assembly and the CM House.

He said that their next step will be severe. A bureaucrat will not be allowed to take up the post of VC in any university. The recruitment of teachers on contract basis is regrettable, he added.

The FAPUASA says that the 18th Amendment transfers powers to the private sector, but the PPP is centralising it.

On the appeal of FAPUASA, Sindh Chapter, a complete boycott of teaching was held in Sindh universities. Teaching remained suspended in all government universities. Teachers boycotted academic activities to send a clear message to the government that ignoring the serious problems facing Sindh universities is unacceptable.

FAPUASA Sindh Chapter President Ikhtiar Ali Ghumro said, he is grateful to all university teachers who made the protest a success. This sacrifice will prove to be an important milestone in saving the higher education system and highlighting its crises.
