An iconic image of Nicole Kidman smoking a cigarette next to her ex-husband Tom Cruise has gone viral on social media.
The photograph captures the Australian actress looking stunning in a gold dress at a Vanity Fair Oscar Party in West Hollywood in 2000.
In the photo, Kidman is seen taking a deep puff from a cigarette inside the famous Los Angeles restaurant Morton's, with her former husband looking on. The image was taken just under a year before their separation.
Fans have interpreted the photo—featured in the photography book Jonathan Becker: Lost Time—as a sign that her marriage to Tom was already on the rocks.
"She looked dead inside next to Tom," one person commented after it was reshared by the Instagram account Velvet Coke.
"She hated that man... she is so stunning honestly, that hair," another person agreed.
"I love that you can see her resentment for him... The day that divorce was final, our girl came back to life!" a third person wrote.
"I wonder if she ever even liked Tom at all," another person questioned.
"He was SO lucky to be by this woman's side," one fan said, while another added, "She's so beautiful and then Tom Cruise is just right there..."
Nicole and Tom met while filming Days of Thunder in 1989 and married the following year.
They have two adopted children—Connor, 29, and Isabella Cruise, 31—and were once one of Hollywood’s most powerful couples, making millions from their joint projects.
The couple separated in 2001, with Tom publicly announcing the split on February 4 that year.
While the breakup reportedly came as a "major shock" to Nicole, the Australian actress refused to remain in her ex-husband's shadow, unlike his first wife, Mimi Rogers.
Instead, the Academy Award-winning actress has forged a career that has arguably surpassed that of Tom.
After her 2001 divorce, Nicole starred in roles in Moulin Rouge, The Hours (which earned her an Oscar), and The Others.
