In a distressing reflection of the year 2024, the capital city witnessed nearly 900 individuals, including a significant number of women and children, being abducted, and 152 being sexually assaulted or molested.
The breakdown of these incidents reveals that 891 kidnapping cases were reported, with a staggering 483 teenage girls among the victims. The gender breakdown further emphasises the vulnerability of women and girls, accounting for the majority of the abduction cases. These kidnappings were not isolated to one area, but rather spanned across the city's zones indicating a pervasive issue that cuts across all demographics and localities. These cases represent the profound trauma and suffering inflicted on countless individuals and their families.
Failure to protect women and children in the capital city is a glaring indictment of the current security and legal systems. One of the most pressing needs is to enhance the capacity and accountability of law enforcement agencies. Increased patrolling in high-risk areas, coupled with the establishment of specialised units to handle cases of abduction and sexual violence, can significantly deter potential offenders. Furthermore, investing in training for police officers to handle these cases with sensitivity and efficiency will ensure that victims receive the support they need and that perpetrators are apprehended swiftly. Use of modern technology, such as surveillance systems, GPS tracking and data analytics, can aid in tracking down offenders and preventing future incidents.
There must be stringent enforcement of laws and swift justice for perpetrators along with robust support systems for survivors to create a safer environment where women and children can live without fear of abduction or assault. The protection of women and children must be a top priority, and it is through collective effort that we can ensure that their safety and dignity are upheld.
