Mel Gibson is progressing with the long-awaited sequel to ‘The Passion of the Christ’, revealing a new title for the project.
The filmmaker, known for his 2004 hit, which depicted the final hours of Jesus Christ, has confirmed that the sequel will be called ‘The Resurrection of Christ’. The original film became one of the most controversial and financially successful movies of its time, breaking box office records and holding the title of America’s highest-grossing R-rated film until the release of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’.
Now, after years of delays and development, Gibson is ready to continue the story, focusing on the resurrection. The follow-up will delve deeper into the resurrection than many might expect, exploring the event and its broader context. While filming was initially expected to start in 2025, Gibson has since stated that production will likely begin in 2026. The filmmaker explained that pre-production needs to be completed before the process can truly begin, acknowledging the complexity of the project.
Gibson revealed that the script, co-written with his brother and Randall Wallace, took seven years to complete. He described the story as "wild," noting the complexity of the resurrection narrative, which doesn't follow a linear structure.
As Gibson explained, the story will require a larger framework, involving elements like the fall of angels and journeys into realms like Hell and Sheol. Gibson’s comments suggest that the sequel may incorporate themes from Christian eschatology, exploring spiritual realms and battles between good and evil.
