Hollywood sign rumored to be on fire as Los Angeles wildfire intensifies

The Sunset Fire ignited near Runyon Canyon, threatening landmarks and homes in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley announced a new brush fire, named the Sunset Fire, which ignited in Hollywood Hills near Runyon Canyon on Wednesday around 5:30 p.m.

Photos and videos of the blaze quickly surfaced online, with some depicting the Hollywood sign appearing to catch fire in the Santa Monica Mountains. One viral image showed the iconic sign seemingly ablaze.

However, the image was confirmed to be AI-generated, as indicated by a Grok AI watermark in the bottom right corner. Another clear giveaway was an added letter in the sign. 

A second image without the Grok watermark also circulated, causing confusion among viewers. This, too, was debunked when other X users shared webcam footage showing the Hollywood sign intact.

Raw Reporting clarified the misinformation, stating: "The current fire is approximately 2.3 miles away from the iconic Hollywood sign. Images circulating online of the sign smoldering or on fire are fake."

A video of the Sunset Fire shared on X displayed a crimson-lit horizon and thick smoke billowing into the sky.

Following the fire’s outbreak, the fire department issued a warning: "Evacuate now from the area of Runyon Canyon. Those not in the evacuation area should shelter in place. Evacuation order for Sunset Fire."

As of the time of reporting, the Sunset Fire had consumed over 20 acres and was advancing toward hiking trails and luxury homes along Hollywood Boulevard.
