The husband of Republican Senator Deb Fischer, Bruce Fischer, appeared to reject Vice President Kamala Harris' handshake during a swearing-in ceremony held overnight. Harris was overseeing the swearing-in of new senators in her capacity as vice president.
As Senator Fischer from Nebraska approached to take her oath of office, she and Harris exchanged a handshake and smiled at each other.
However, when it came time for Bruce Fischer to hold the Bible for his wife, Harris attempted to engage him in small talk, but he did not respond or make eye contact.
Once the swearing-in ceremony was complete, Senator Fischer and Harris shook hands again. However, when Harris extended her hand to Mr. Fischer, he did not take it.
Harris, offering a gesture of congratulations, said, "May I give congratulations to you?" Mr. Fischer simply replied, "Thank you," before placing his hand in his pocket.
The interaction concluded with a brief exchange as they posed for an official photo, during which Harris appeared to grimace.
Senator Fischer, currently in her third term representing Nebraska, won re-election with 53% of the vote in a state where Democrats did not put up a candidate.
She faced a close race against independent challenger Dan Osborn. In the state, where the electoral college votes are allocated by congressional district, Harris garnered 39% of the vote, winning Nebraska’s Second Congressional District.
