Fake degree case: SC orders action against PPP MNA

The Supreme Court has ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to take action against former PPP MNA Amir Yar Waran.

The Supreme Court (SC) ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan on Friday to take action against former PPP MNA Amir Yar Waran for possessing a fake degree.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the case.

When contacted, the Balochistan University registrar confirmed that Mr Waran's degree had been declared fake by the university's academic council.

Mr Waran resigned from the National Assembly after reports of his degree being fake surfaced.

In his remarks, the chief justice said that not all parliamentarians were bad and that their abilities should not be judged by a few black sheep.

Sohal Qadir | 14 years ago | Reply Some parts of the media are busy in irresponsible propaganda being hatched against democratic institutions, political leaders and elected members that may prove consequential for the future of democracy as well as the supremacy of the constitution and the law. No doubt Pakistani media has waged a long struggle to achieve its freedom but at the point when out media is free it must also understand its responsibilities and act in a rational manner. Most sections of the media are using this freedom to malign the image of elected representatives and resulting in the defame of nation. The issue of fake degree is totally a personal matter of politicians; they were elected by the popular vote of people. They did not come through back doors. Media must avoid to derail the democratic process. As we have democracy restored after a long time and such irresponsible moves could give irreparable loss to nascent democracy.
