The price of high-speed diesel is likely to be increased by Rs3.62 per litre for the fortnight beginning from January 1, 2025.
However, the price of petrol may rise by only 11 paisa per litre and settle at Rs252.11. High-speed diesel price, after an estimated increase of Rs3.62, will reach Rs259 per litre.
Petrol is mainly used in passenger vehicles while diesel is primarily consumed in heavy transport and agricultural sectors.
The ex-depot price of kerosene oil may be kept unchanged at the current level of Rs161.66 per litre while light diesel oil may go up by Rs3.03 to Rs151.97 per litre.
Energy experts point out that the premium on oil is $8.69 per barrel. The calculation has been made while keeping in view the current rate of petroleum levy, general sales tax and currency exchange rate. Inland freight equalisation margin is projected to stay at Rs7.92 per litre for petrol and Rs4.18 per litre for high-speed diesel.
Sources say that the price difference for petrol and light diesel oil in different parts of the country may be addressed with the help of inland freight equalisation margin.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) will make its calculations and submit them to the federal government for final decision on Tuesday night, which is the last day of December.
