Huawei reduced the prices of several high-end devices, including mobile phones, by up to 3,000 yuan ($411) during a "Super Brand Day" promotion over the weekend on China’s leading e-commerce platform JD.com.

The Shenzhen-based tech giant announced the price cuts, which included discounts on smartphones, tablets, headphones, and smartwatches, in a post on its official Weibo social media account on Sunday. The promotion ran from Saturday evening to midnight on Sunday.

Among the most notable price cuts was the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, which saw a substantial 18% discount. The 1-terabyte version of the device, launched in April, is now priced at 8,999 yuan (US$1,233), down from its original price of 10,999 yuan. The 512-gigabyte version of the phone received an even steeper discount, with a 20% reduction.

Additionally, the foldable Huawei Mate X5, launched in September 2023, is now available at 2,500 yuan less than its original price of 12,999 yuan, reflecting a 19% discount. The Mate X5, which has been the top-selling foldable smartphone in China since its release, according to research firm CINNO, is expected to drive continued interest in Huawei’s foldable devices.

These price cuts come just months after the company implemented similar reductions in July, when the Pura 70 series saw discounts of up to 1,000 yuan.

The latest discounts follow the release of Huawei’s flagship Mate 70 series and the Mate X6 foldable smartphone in November. Huawei is looking to secure a larger share of the smartphone market, which is currently dominated by Apple and several Chinese rivals.

Huawei's domestic shipments of premium smartphones – those priced above $600 – surged by 34% in the third quarter, according to consultancy Canalys. The company now holds a 33% share of the Chinese smartphone market, narrowing the gap with Apple, which maintains a 52% share.

Despite strong sales, analysts suggest that the Mate 70 series is facing challenges due to its weaker processors compared to competitors. However, total shipments of the Mate 70 series are still expected to exceed 10 million units during its lifecycle, according to Counterpoint Research.

The release of the Mate 70 series was closely watched by the industry for indications of Huawei’s progress in chip development. Last year, the company surprised the tech world by incorporating a 7-nanometre chip in its Mate 60 series smartphones, despite being on a US blacklist.

Huawei's foldable handsets continue to attract attention, with the company remaining the top foldable smartphone vendor in China. The company now accounts for around half of the total domestic shipments of foldable devices, according to Counterpoint.

In September, Huawei launched the world’s first trifold smartphone, the Mate XT, alongside the Mate X6. These devices are expected to further solidify Huawei’s position as a leader in the foldable smartphone segment.

According to CINNO, Huawei shipped 1.12 million foldable smartphones in the third quarter of 2024, marking a 97% year-on-year increase. The Mate X5 was a key driver in this growth, contributing significantly to the surge in shipments.
