Donkey Sartaj and driver Arif stood first among 40 participants in the Karachi Donkey Cart Race held on Wednesday under the Sindh Sports Department.
The race started from ICI Tower on Mai Kolachi Road and ended at Frere Hall. The winner donkey Sartaj and owner, Liaquatabad resident Arif, rode off with cash prize of Rs100,000. Sartaj had also secured first position in the Champions Donkey Cart Race.
Donkey Bijli or Lightning, driven by jokey Tariq, came second, while Kala or the Black with jokey Zakir in the seat, secured third place. Chai Patti and owner Asghar got the fourth position.
The second position was awarded with Rs75,000 and the third position was awarded Rs50,000. While, the next four riders were given Rs25,000 each.
More than 40 donkey carts from across the city participated in the race. The prize distribution ceremony was graced by Secretary Sports Abdul Aleem Lashari. He said that the Sindh government has decided to register the owners participating in the donkey cart race.
On the instructions of Sports Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Mehar, financial and administrative assistance will be provided to the registered riders of the donkey cart race.
He stressed on the importance of taking care of the welfare of the animals, mentioning further that the donkey cart race will be extended to other parts of Sindh. There is a lot of talent related to sports among the youth of Sindh, so we will provide better opportunities to highlight the capabilities of this talent, he said.
