Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the star-studded cast for the highly anticipated film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling thriller, Verity. Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, and Anne Hathaway will lead the gothic psychosexual drama, directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick).
Dakota Johnson, who will also serve as an executive producer, takes on the role of Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to complete the unfinished works of bestselling author Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway. Josh Hartnett stars as Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s enigmatic husband, further entwining Lowen in the dark mystery.
The screenplay, currently written by The Act creator Nick Antosca, builds on previous drafts by Colleen Hoover herself, Lauren Levine, Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and more. Producers include Antosca and Alex Hedlund for Eat the Cat, Showalter and Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions, and Stacey Sher for Shiny Penny. Dakota Johnson’s TeaTime Pictures and Colleen Hoover’s Heartbones Entertainment are also attached, marking a powerhouse collaboration.
The film comes as both Johnson and Hartnett ride waves of critical and commercial success. Johnson recently produced and starred in Daddio alongside Sean Penn and wrapped production on Materialists and Splitsville. She is also known for Cha Cha Real Smooth, which won the Sundance Audience Award in 2022. Meanwhile, Hartnett gained acclaim for his roles in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, The Bear, and M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap.
