FX’s critically acclaimed series English Teacher is facing uncertainty following allegations of sexual assault against its creator and star, Brian Jordan Alvarez. Despite the show’s success, which includes multiple award nominations and a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score, its future remains in doubt after allegations surfaced in a detailed report by Vulture.
Jon Ebeling, a former collaborator, accused Alvarez of sexually assaulting him in 2016 during the filming of The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. A day before English Teacher premiered, Ebeling filed a police report and reported the incident to the Screen Actors Guild. Alvarez has denied the allegations, calling their interactions “entirely consensual” and citing a 2018 taped admission from Ebeling supporting his claims. In a statement to The Daily Beast, Alvarez criticized Vulture for publishing what he called “falsehoods,” adding that he is considering legal action.
FX has also declined to comment directly on the show’s future but acknowledged reviewing the allegations before its premiere. “Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns,” a spokesperson said, adding that no further comment would be provided. The network’s silence on whether English Teacher will be renewed has only fueled speculation, especially as the show garners critical acclaim and industry recognition.
The fallout extends to mutual collaborators, including co-star and writer Stephanie Koenig, who was dating Ebeling at the time of the alleged incident. According to Vulture, Koenig interpreted the incident as infidelity, and mutual friends sided with Alvarez. Ebeling claims these reactions have hindered his attempts to share his story.
The controversy surrounding Alvarez underscores the challenges of balancing accountability and success in Hollywood. As fans await updates on the series, English Teacher’s future remains shrouded in uncertainty, casting a shadow over its critical and commercial triumphs.
