Hair loss is a common concern among older women, often influenced by factors such as genetics, medical conditions, and lifestyle choices. While some causes are unavoidable, certain habits can exacerbate hair thinning.

Dr. John Kahen, a hair restoration expert at Smart Restoration in Beverly Hills, California, highlights common mistakes that contribute to hair loss in older women.

1. Ignoring Product Ingredients

Selecting appropriate haircare products is crucial. Dr. Kahen advises avoiding shampoos and conditioners containing harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, glycol distearate, and sodium chloride, as these can damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss. Additionally, while keratin treatments are popular for adding shine, they often contain formaldehyde and, when combined with heat styling, can cause hair breakage. It's essential to read labels carefully and choose products free from these damaging ingredients.

2. Wearing Tight Hairstyles

Hairstyles that pull the hair tightly, such as braids or buns, can cause traction alopecia by placing excessive strain on hair follicles. Dr. Kahen notes that longer, heavier hairstyles increase this strain, leading to follicle damage and hair loss. Opting for looser styles can help reduce this risk.

3. Neglecting Scalp Health

A healthy scalp is vital for hair growth. Neglecting scalp care can lead to conditions like dandruff or infections, which may impede hair growth and contribute to hair loss. Regular cleansing and gentle exfoliation can maintain scalp health and support hair vitality.

4. Poor Nutrition

Diet significantly impacts hair health. Deficiencies in essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, can weaken hair and promote loss. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in proteins, iron, and vitamins supports hair strength and growth.

5. Overusing Heat Styling Tools

Frequent use of heat styling tools can damage hair shafts, leading to breakage and loss. Dr. Kahen recommends minimizing the use of such tools and applying heat protectant products when styling to mitigate damage.

By being mindful of these factors and adopting healthier haircare practices, older women can help reduce hair loss and maintain healthier hair as they age.
