Five people are dead, and several others have been injured following a shooting on Monday at a private Christian school in Wisconsin. Authorities confirmed that a child, who was involved in the attack, was among the deceased.

The Madison Police Department confirmed that they began responding to the incident at 10:57 am on Monday and advised the public to avoid the area surrounding the school, according to CNN.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes spoke to reporters, revealing that the death toll had risen from three to five people. He did not provide further details about the victims but confirmed that others had been wounded in the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School.

Barnes stated that responding police officers did not fire their weapons during the incident. The area around the school was cordoned off by authorities Monday afternoon as the investigation continued. Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) have arrived at the scene to assist local law enforcement.

In a statement, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed his condolences: "We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond."

Abundant Life Christian School, which is non-denominational, serves approximately 390 students, ranging from kindergarten through high school, according to its website.
