Patients at the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) are expressing growing frustration as they face long queues and extended waiting times, even in emergency situations. Elderly patients, some in wheelchairs, are particularly suffering as they are forced to endure prolonged waits for medical attention.
The RIC, which was established by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, is now struggling with a range of issues.
Patients often receive lengthy dates for various procedures, and the hospital's treatment system shifts to a private approach after 2pm. This has raised concerns that patients may be deliberately delayed to generate additional charges, as they are pushed to seek treatment outside regular hours.
Adding to the difficulties, the emergency department is facing a shortage of senior doctors, with most of the workload falling on junior staff.
The increasing number of patients arriving in the emergency room is overwhelming medical staff and doctors, resulting in serious challenges for those seeking urgent care.
Attempts to reach the Medical Superintendent (MS), Dr Ayaz Haider, for comment on the matter were unsuccessful.
In August, Major General Dr Azhar Mahmood Kayani, the former Executive Director of RIC and current Health Advisor to Punjab, visited the hospital to address patient concerns.
After listening to their grievances, he instructed the RIC administration to resolve the issues, improve the situation, and ensure better facilities for patients.
