Elton John named Time’s 2024 Icon of the Year for his enduring legacy

Sir Elton John has been named Time magazine’s 2024 Icon of the Year, an honor highlighting his transformative impact on music, philanthropy, and pop culture. In a candid interview for the cover story, the music legend reflected on his storied career, his enduring relevance, and the causes he holds dear.

“If people remember that we tried to change the world a little bit, we were kind, we tried to help people … And then, apart from that, there was the music,” John shared.

The magazine noted John’s multi-decade influence, citing his 57 U.S. Top 40 hits and his evolution from a flamboyant performer to a Broadway composer, Disney songwriter, and collaborator with younger artists. Writer Belinda Luscombe lauded his transition into a "fourth act," connecting with new generations while sustaining his prolific creativity.

Among those praising John were Dua Lipa, who collaborated with him on the hit Cold Heart. “It was because of our friendship,” Lipa said. “Singing alongside one of my musical heroes was a no-brainer.” Rising star Chappell Roan also shared advice John gave her: “The songs will come. He thought he wouldn’t have the ideas, but they were absolutely there. He just had to let them come to him.”

John reflected on his challenges, from his Broadway musical Tammy Faye closing after a brief run to his discomfort with music videos. “Music videos should be made by good-looking people like Harry Styles,” he joked.
