Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League graduate charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, reportedly discussed his health struggles in detail on Reddit under the username Mister_Cactus. Posts dating back to 2018 reveal Mangione frequently detailed issues like restless sleep, back pain, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
In one post, Mangione described waking up multiple times during the night, despite leading a healthy lifestyle free of stress and substances. Another entry discussed his experience with IBS and testing for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), seeking advice on pursuing a low FODMAP diet.
Mangione’s struggles extended to his back condition, spondylolisthesis, which he referred to as "devastating" for his athletic lifestyle. However, he shared a more positive update in 2024, detailing a successful spinal fusion surgery. Mangione described being pain-free within a week of the operation, offering encouragement to others with similar issues.
Despite his online openness, Mangione has been charged with a heinous crime. On December 4, he allegedly used a "ghost gun" to fatally shoot Thompson outside a New York City hotel. Bullet casings at the scene bore phrases linked to insurance industry practices, while a manifesto railing against healthcare companies was reportedly found in Mangione’s possession.
Mangione faces multiple charges, including murder and illegal possession of weapons. During his extradition hearing on December 10, his family expressed shock over his arrest, calling it "devastating."
The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting Mangione's contrasting digital persona and alleged criminal actions.
