The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) successfully conducted the highly anticipated Pakistan Mathematics Olympiad (PMO) 2024, a significant initiative in collaboration with the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ICESCO).
According to FBISE, the Olympiad aims to identify and nurture mathematical talent among secondary and higher secondary students, both within Pakistan and abroad.
The examination was held simultaneously across 69 centres nationwide and three international locations, providing a unique platform for over 7,500 participants to showcase their mathematical skills.
The Olympiad's syllabus, designed by the Mathematics Department of LUMS and aligned with international standards, allowed students to engage in challenging problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical exercises.
A key moment of the event was the presence of Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, Federal Secretary for Education, at Islamabad Model College for Boys in I-8/3. He personally welcomed the students and was joined by Syed Junaid Akhlaq, Chairman FBISE, along with other senior officials from FBISE and the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE). Wani interacted with students, parents, and staff, praising their enthusiasm and commitment.
In his remarks to the media, Wani emphasised the crucial role of mathematics in preparing young minds for the challenges of the modern world. "Mathematics is the foundation of critical thinking and problem-solvingskills essential for innovation and progress. Initiatives like the PMO inspire students to embrace challenges and foster a lifelong passion for learning," he said.
He also commended the efforts of FBISE, LUMS, and ICESCO for promoting academic excellence, stating, "The PMO is not just a competition; it's a movement to ignite intellectual curiosity among our youth."
The PMO 2024 also provides a range of incentives for participants, including cash prizes, medals, laptops, and opportunities for admission to top-tier educational institutions in Pakistan. These rewards are designed to motivate students to excel and make meaningful contributions to society.
