Brian Cox has once again voiced his concerns over Jeremy Strong’s Method acting style, despite praising his Emmy-winning performance as Kendall Roy in HBO's acclaimed drama Succession.
Speaking to The Guardian, Cox highlighted Strong's talent while expressing frustration over his co-star’s immersive approach, which Cox believes disrupts the ensemble dynamic.
“He was wonderful to act with. I had no argument with Jeremy’s acting,” Cox said, emphasizing his appreciation for Strong’s work. However, he added, “He would be an even better actor if he just got rid of [the Method approach], so there would be much more inclusiveness in what he did.”
Cox further elaborated that remaining "permanently in character" creates "hostility" on set, making collaboration challenging. Despite their differences, Cox refrained from confronting Strong about the issue directly, noting, “It’s a very emotive subject for people who follow the Strasberg line.”
The veteran actor admitted his candid remarks have occasionally stirred controversy. “I’ve upset a few people over the years … Sometimes I have been fairly volatile, and I think, ‘Why the [expletive] did you say that?’” Cox remarked, also acknowledging previous criticisms of Johnny Depp and Steven Seagal.
Strong has previously defended his process, stating he takes his character as seriously as his own life. Reflecting on the criticism, he said, “We’re a family in every sense of the word. But foundationally, there’s deep respect and even love.”
The debate between acting styles remains a prominent discussion in the entertainment industry, particularly among stars like Cox and Strong, whose performances have captivated audiences worldwide.
