Nicko McBrain, the long-time drummer of Iron Maiden, has officially announced his retirement, bringing an end to a remarkable chapter in the band’s history.

The 72-year-old drummer, who faced a stroke in January 2023 but made a successful recovery to rejoin the band four months later, shared the news on the band's official website.

“After much consideration, it is with both sorrow and joy, I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle," McBrain wrote. "Today, Saturday, December 7th, Sao Paulo will be my final gig with Iron Maiden. I wish the band much success moving forward.”

Joining Iron Maiden in 1982, McBrain was a pivotal member of the band, first appearing on their landmark 1983 album Piece of Mind. However, last year’s stroke had a profound effect on his performance. In the aftermath, McBrain admitted he wasn’t fully recovered, revealing that the band’s more complex material had become challenging for him. “I unfortunately haven't been able to give you lot 100% of my performance,” he shared after his stroke.

Despite these challenges, McBrain expressed gratitude for the support of his bandmates, particularly bassist Steve Harris. “It ain’t the old Nicko – it’s not the old one by a long shot. But at least it's part of me,” he said in July 2024. “And my band, bless their hearts, Steve Harris and the rest of the guys turn around and say, ‘If you can’t do something in a song, we just won’t do that song.’”

In his statement announcing his retirement, McBrain reassured fans that he would remain close to the band’s legacy. “Touring with Maiden the last 42 years has been an incredible journey," McBrain stated. "To my bandmates, you made it a dream come true and I love you! I look into the future with much excitement and great hope! I’ll be seeing you soon, may God bless you all, and, of course, 'Up the Irons!'”

Iron Maiden’s manager, Rod Smallwood, also expressed his appreciation for McBrain’s contributions, recalling the countless memories the band had together over the years. “Thank you for being an irrepressible force behind the drum kit for Maiden for 42 years and my friend for even longer,” Smallwood said. “The band and I all have a thousand great memories of the past 42 years—great gigs, platinum and gold discs, and love from the fans. Such a bond is forever! As Steve Harris says, ‘Nicko is and will always be part of the Maiden family.’”

Tonight’s show in Sao Paulo will mark the final performance of Iron Maiden’s 2024 The Future Past tour. The band is set to return to the stage in May 2025 for their Run For Your Lives tour, with a replacement drummer already selected. “Maiden always get their man, and our already chosen new drummer will be announced very shortly,” the band confirmed.

While McBrain’s departure signals the end of an era, his influence on Iron Maiden’s success and legacy will undoubtedly remain. The band continues its journey, but McBrain’s role in shaping their iconic sound will always be remembered.
