A Chinese man was trapped in an abandoned well for three days in Thailand after his cries for help were mistakenly believed to be ghostly sounds, local media reported.
The unusual incident occurred near the Thailand-Myanmar border last month when villagers heard strange cries emanating from a nearby forest, prompting them to stop venturing outdoors after dark. They believed the sounds were associated with hauntings.
Authorities in Mae Sot, Tak province, said rescue teams were dispatched after the cries were reported.
Upon reaching the source, they discovered a 22-year-old Chinese man, identified as Liu Chuanyi, at the bottom of a 12-metre deep well. He was rescued and taken to hospital with injuries, including a fractured wrist, a concussion, and bruises.
Liu reportedly fell into the well while trying to find his way out of the forest. To conserve energy, he had shouted for help once every hour during his ordeal.
His rescue came after local villagers, hearing his cries, initially assumed they were the result of supernatural activity. They did not investigate the noise, believing it to be the work of a wizard.
Liu, who was trapped without food or water for three days, was later reported to have regained his health after receiving medical treatment. The incident has sparked widespread attention on Chinese social media, with users praising Liu’s perseverance.
One social media user commented, “A Chinese man shouting for help in the middle of nowhere? Of course, the locals can’t understand the language and might think it was a wizard uttering spells."
Authorities are investigating the incident further, but initial reports suggest that Liu accidentally fell into the well while navigating the dense forest.
