Speaking during the hearing, the chief justice said that the time to take action had come.
Earlier today, Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq informed the court that the situation in the city had improved after the chief justice had taken suo motu notice.
He asserted that the army was not needed in the province and said that only the federal and provincial governments could call the armed forces in Karachi if it was needed.
The attorney general admitted that the police had not taken action against terrorists.
Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, a member of the bench, also criticised the government for its failure to curb bloodshed in Katti Pahari.
During the previous hearing, the Inspector General of Police (IG) Sindh Wajid Ali Durrani had confessed that an incomplete FIR had led to exoneration of alleged attackers.
The bench had earlier ripped apart the Sindh police’s handling of the investigations into the massacre in the metropolis, where over 400 people died in three months.

Here is a note of caution for all those who hate democracy and are gleeful at the thought of army coming to power. If army comes to power, it is not going to be like Mush’s rule all over again where he used some political parties according to his political needs and ambitions. This time it would be a ruthless action against all militant and regional political parties. Their specific targets would be regional and nationalist parties which are already labeled by some quarters and agencies as terrorists. This includes but not limited to Baloch nationalists. As we say here “you might get what you wished for!”
@Farheen Rizvi
One of the problems is that there are too many locals in the police. They are part of the problem and support the criminals. Unfortunately the mandate of the people has voted criminals into power.
People who are talking about "Mandate of Karachi" must know that mandate doesnt give authority to that specific party to start killing people of other ethnicities ... i dont know from where you people get you basic moral and ethic education from ("oh wait i forgot in Pakistan we dont have such subjects in high school") ! - criminals must be treated as criminals and some how CJ, JIT, Ranger and Police is doing favor to these Political forces by helping them get rid of their militant wings ... SO PLEASE STOP TAKING SIDES, TAKE SIDE OF PAKISTAN ... Agar mulk na raha tuo MQM ka kya karo gay ?
You can not say one system is better than other especially the system that people elect for themselves. If CJ knows what a true democracy is than we request him to sspeak up and endorse the mandate of the people of Karachi. There is no system like democracy if the people that area rules instead of feudals and , bureaucrates. The police needs to be depoliticize and should be appointed from the locals. The police will only serve if they have their own interest and stake there. Army is not needed if Police and rangers can play their role without pressure from political parties.
In Pakistan Army, Bureaucracy, Elected Government, Media and Judiciary all serves and strengthened the Feudal System, they all secure their compensations and position nothing else. I don’t see any hope or change for the ordinary masses until we the common men/women will take charge of our own destiny and abolish his colonial feudal system from top to bottom. Pakistan needs real reforms, just patching, blaming others or putting dirt under the carpet will not resolve Pakistan real issues. We need to understand the root cause of the problem and must confront the feudal system, the real menace of all our social, political, economic, internal security, external threats and terrorism problems.
CJ should make sure that the appointments in Police are local and on merit. This is the only way to ensure peace. We don't need corrupt police who are a part of the issue.
I do not understand that why it is sooooooo difficult to understand that the Police has gangsters in it that support political parties. The best example is ZM hiself admitted that he has recruited 10 thousand people. Karachities were not crying out loud for ARMY because they think that the police cannot take care of the situation, it was becasue the Police and law enforcement agencies were completely biased. Hours and in some cases days of ignorance of terror attacks, (e.g. Kati Pahari) made people of Karachi beg for Army to take control. And right now, as you can see that what is happening in Karachi with these rains......simple question to CJ is what is it going to take for him to order TO GIVE THE CITY TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE MANDATE OF THE CITY. That is the system that works around the whole world. What is soooooo difficult about it.
What a simple truth! "The government should perform better than the dictator" if it do not then obvious which is worse. Police is under the government and it can also call in the army. Failure to create law and order is the failure of the govt. PPP must reconsider its stance.
Katti Pahari ( Orangi Town ) incident was a planned conspiracy to push Karachi to a civil war like situation. There should be a judicial inquiry into the role of federal, provincial government & law enforcement agenices where they didnot act for five days and more then 100 innocent people lost their lives.
who is the biggest dictator? dictatoship is an attitude , not actions. What a democracy....haha, did we want this one? please go ahead u will never succeed with this sort of attitude.
...so does this imply that things under dictatorship were better?
Civilian government has always been worse than military rule in Pakistan. What good change has the Honourable Chief Justice caused to the lives of the poor making use of democratic government? rather government has learnt to defy court orders setting a horrible example for future democracies. This is the worst situation ever in the presence of independent judiciary and democratic government.
The honourable Chief Justice should send such democracies home immediately and hold fresh elections, and this process should continue until judiciary is satisfied and the democracy can face the poor people.
hopefully court will take brave decisions rather then nro
Sack the police if they are good for nothing. Merge them with rangers but do not waste our money.
Sooner than later, court should give verdict. Moreover, regardless of ethnics all those criminals should be brought to justice as soon as possible.
The attorney general admitted that the police had not taken action against terrorists.
Who is responsible for the death of innocent people Mr. Attorney General?
