PlayStation 5 celebrates 30th anniversary with nostalgic update and customizable themes
PlayStation 5 players woke up to a delightful surprise with the latest system update celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation, which debuted in Japan on December 3, 1994. Upon applying the update, players are greeted with the iconic PS1 start-up screen and sounds, followed by the PlayStation 30th Anniversary logo before logging in.
The celebration doesn’t stop there. Sony has introduced limited-time dynamic themes that allow players to customize their PS5 UI with designs and sounds from all five console generations: PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and the PS5 itself. Players can access the themes directly from the initial announcement or via the Settings menu under “PlayStation 30th Anniversary.”
Fans have long wished for customizable themes on the PS5, a feature present on previous PlayStation consoles. This update marks a temporary return of the feature, with Sony hinting at the possibility of making it more permanent in the future.
Alongside the nostalgic update, Sony released a heartfelt video thanking players for 30 years of support. The two-minute clip showcases iconic PlayStation games from across its history, celebrating themes like love, adventure, and creativity before closing with a message of gratitude: “Thank you for 30 Years of Play.”
This update not only celebrates PlayStation’s rich history, from Final Fantasy VII to Spider-Man 2, but also highlights the community that has made the brand a gaming powerhouse. While the themes are only available for a limited time, this anniversary celebration offers a glimpse into PlayStation’s legacy and its exciting future.
