The 77-year-old singer, who composed the music for the West End production, shared with the audience that he has lost sight in his right eye and has limited vision in his left. He explained that this impairment, caused by a severe eye infection he contracted in France earlier this year, has made it difficult for him to attend previews or fully experience the performance.

In his speech, John thanked his husband, David Furnish, for being a constant support during this challenging time. Despite not being able to see the show, he expressed his enjoyment of hearing the music, which he said sounded wonderful that evening. John's eye condition has caused significant disruption to his professional life, including delaying his upcoming album with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. In a recent interview, John explained that his eyesight issues have made it difficult for him to work in the studio, as he struggles to read lyrics.

The gala performance, held at London's Dominion Theatre, was part of the opening of The Devil Wears Prada in the West End. The musical, based on Lauren Weisberger's novel and the 2006 film adaptation, tells the story of a young journalist working for a demanding fashion magazine editor, Miranda Priestly. At the event, many fashion industry luminaries were in attendance, including Vogue's Anna Wintour, who has been speculated to have inspired the character of Priestly.

The performance raised funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, continuing John's long-standing commitment to charitable causes.
