Alex Consani, the model and Teen Vogue cover star, has made history once again by becoming the first out trans woman to be awarded Model of the Year at the 2024 British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards. The prestigious ceremony, held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, recognized Consani’s groundbreaking achievements in the fashion industry. In her emotional acceptance speech, Consani expressed gratitude to those who paved the way for her success, particularly Black trans women like Dominique Jackson, Connie Fleming, and Aaron Rose Phillips, who fought for the space that allowed her to flourish.
“I’m the first trans woman to win this award,” Consani declared, thanking her parents for their unwavering support and encouraging other parents of trans children to do the same. She emphasized the importance of change and inclusion, concluding her speech to loud applause: “Change is more than possible; it’s needed.”
For the event, Consani wore a striking corseted dress with a Union Jack draping, designed by Dilara Findikoglu, a look that came about through a personal message exchange. This win further solidifies Consani’s position as a trailblazer, not just in fashion but also in representation. Earlier this year, she made history as one of the first two trans women to walk the red carpet at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and she continues to challenge the fashion industry’s standards of inclusion.
At the Teen Vogue Summit in November, Consani shared her experiences navigating an industry that still struggles with true diversity. She emphasized how the lack of representation motivates her to work harder and push for broader inclusion for all marginalized groups in fashion.
