Bill tabled to make CM varsities' chancellor

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has introduced an amendment to the universities' law, transferring the powers of university chancellor from the governor to the chief minister.

The amendment also grants the chief minister authority to appoint vice-chancellors. The proposed bill was presented in the provincial assembly, designating the chief minister as the chancellor of all public sector universities.

According to the bill, vice-chancellors will serve a four-year term, subject to a mid-term performance review by a government-formed evaluation committee. For women's public universities in the province, only female candidates will be eligible for the vice-chancellor positions.

Minister for Higher Education Meena Khan presented the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities (Amendment) Bill 2024 in the assembly. The bill amends the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities Act 2012, introducing administrative changes and transferring the authority to appoint vice-chancellors to the chief minister.
