LAHORE:

The city became the latest stop for a UN Women Pakistan campaign aimed at igniting conversations and inspiring collective action against gender-based violence (GBV).

As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the educational institutes transform into platforms for theatrical performances, placing the urgent issue in the spotlight. An event in connection with the Rolling Resistance: Theatre on Wheels series was organised at Punjab University Gender Studies Department, which was attended by a large number of students and faculty members.

UN Women Pakistan Sindh and Punjab Office Head Anwar Qureshi said on the occasion, "Through creative platforms like Rolling Resistance, we aim to spark dialogue, foster empathy and empower communities to reject violence in all its forms." Qureshi added, "Gender-based violence is not just a women's issue; it is a human rights crisis affecting every facet of society. Globally, one in three women experiences violence in her lifetime."

Punjab University Gender Studies Department Chairperson Dr Raana Malik praised UN Women's efforts in raising awareness among students.

"The fight against gender-based violence requires not just policies but also a cultural shift that initiatives like these can inspire," said Dr Malik. Punjab Women Development Secretary Usman Ali said, "Theatre is a unique and powerful tool to challenge societal norms and raise awareness."

He said the development was proud to support initiatives that not only spotlighted the pervasive issue of gender-based violence but also inspired collective action. "Together, we can create a safer, more equitable Punjab for everyone," he added. Punjab Anti-Rape Crisis Cell (ARCC) Focal Person Hafiz Muhammad Waseem emphasised collective responsibility in addressing GBV, urging action from all sectors of society. He said the campaign underscored that there was no excuse for violence against women.

He said it was time for all policymakers, educators and citizens to stand united and ensure that every woman and girl in Pakistan lived free from fear.

Audience members reflected on their roles in fostering safer communities and advocating for women's rights.

The national campaign began in Karachi and will conclude in Islamabad. Aligned with the Beijing+30 advocacy priorities, it focuses on strengthening accountability through justice for survivors and holding perpetrators responsible; securing sustainable funding to empower women's rights organisations; and advancing national strategies and action plans to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls.

The global 16 Days of Activism campaign, observed annually from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day), calls for urgent action to end gender-based violence.
