President Joe Biden, 82, sparked discussion during a Black Friday outing in Nantucket, Massachusetts, when he was spotted holding The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonial Conquest and Resistance, 1917-2017. The book, authored by Columbia University professor emeritus Rashid Khalidi, portrays the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a colonial struggle and highlights Palestinian resistance.

Khalidi, a scholar of Palestinian and Lebanese descent, reacted to Biden’s book choice by calling it “four years too late,” referencing its 2020 publication. Khalidi has consistently criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, labeling his administration “the most extreme” in Israel’s history, and argued that U.S. policies have often exacerbated the conflict. The book critiques U.S. support for Israel, particularly under the Trump administration, and suggests a path forward focused on equality and justice.

These themes add complexity to Biden’s public stance. A self-described Zionist, Biden has long supported Israel but has grown increasingly critical of Netanyahu’s government, particularly over civilian casualties in Gaza. Activists have accused him of enabling Israeli actions, even labeling him “Genocide Joe” during protests. Despite such criticism, Biden recently brokered a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, reflecting his administration’s efforts to navigate the conflict.

The President’s decision to publicly display the book has raised speculation about its intent. Some view it as a signal of recognition for the region’s complexities, while others question whether it contradicts his pro-Israel position. The White House has not commented on whether Biden purchased the book or if it was gifted during the visit.

This gesture comes amid ongoing efforts to secure hostages held by Hamas and manage the aftermath of the Gaza conflict, leaving Biden’s action open to interpretation.
