Jay Shah officially began his tenure as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1, 2024. In his first statement as ICC Chair, Shah outlined his key priorities, which include capitalising on cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and further boosting the growth of women’s cricket.

“I am honoured to take on the role of ICC Chair, and I am grateful for the trust and support of the ICC Directors and Member Boards,” Shah said in his inaugural address. He described this moment as a pivotal one for the sport, emphasising the potential that lies in the upcoming Olympic Games and the need to continue developing women’s cricket globally.

Shah highlighted the sport's growing potential, particularly with the expansion of multiple formats, and expressed his commitment to working closely with the ICC team and its Member countries to seize these opportunities. “We are at a critical juncture in the sport’s evolution, and I look forward to taking cricket to new heights,” Shah added.

Jay Shah took office at a time when tensions between Pakistan and India’s cricket boards over the venue for the 2025 Men’s Champions Trophy are at their peak.

The dispute centers around Pakistan’s refusal to accept the "hybrid model" proposed for the event, a plan which involves sharing hosting responsibilities between Pakistan and a neutral venue.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made it clear that it will not agree to any model other than full hosting rights. On the other hand, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declined to send the Indian team to Pakistan due to security and political concerns.

Shah’s election comes after the announcement by current ICC Chair Greg Barclay that he would step down following the completion of his tenure in November, opting not to seek a third term.
