Medical experts on Saturday raised alarms about the unnecessary use of antibiotics, warning that it not only proves ineffective but also contributes to the growing issue of antibiotic resistance.
While speaking at the 36th Medical Conference organised by the Pakistan Medical Association in Karachi, Sindh Healthcare Commission CEO Dr Ahsan Qavi voiced concern over the routine prescription of antibiotics to children in rural areas, particularly for the treatment of diarrhea. The over-prescription of antibiotics is imperiling children's health and exacerbating the global challenge of antibiotic resistance, Dr Naqvi said. He also pointed out that some pharma companies prioritise sales targets, pushing unnecessary medications.
While antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections, they are not only ineffective for viral conditions like diarrhea but can also be harmful.
