MasterChef host Gregg Wallace has stepped down from his role following allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior over the past 17 years. The accusations, made by 13 individuals, include broadcaster Kirsty Wark, who claims Wallace used sexually inappropriate language on multiple occasions during filming.
Wark, a former celebrity contestant on MasterChef in 2011, described two instances where Wallace made inappropriate comments in front of others. According to Wark, the comments were one-sided and left those present feeling uncomfortable. In an interview with the BBC, she expressed her surprise, saying that the behavior was unexpected and unprofessional.
In response to the allegations, Banijay UK, the production company behind MasterChef, launched an investigation. The company acknowledged that while the accusations are historical, they are taking them seriously and have begun an external review. Banijay emphasized its commitment to upholding high conduct standards and prioritizing the safety and well-being of all staff and cast members. Wallace, 60, has agreed to cooperate fully with the review process.
The BBC also issued a statement, reinforcing its commitment to addressing any such issues seriously and following robust procedures for handling complaints. The broadcaster confirmed that it has strict guidelines against inappropriate behavior, and any allegations of this nature are thoroughly investigated. Wallace had previously faced similar allegations in 2018, which were reviewed by the BBC at the time. However, Wallace denied any wrongdoing, stating that no sexual remarks were made during his appearance on Impossible Celebrities.
As the investigation continues, Wallace has stepped down from his MasterChef role. However, pre-recorded episodes of the show will air as planned.
