Alabama A&M University has retracted its statement about the death of football player Medrick Burnett Jr., confirming that he is, in fact, still alive and in stable condition. Earlier on Tuesday, the university had announced that Burnett, a linebacker in his first season with the Bulldogs, had tragically passed away. However, hours later, a correction was issued after further confirmation.

The confusion began with a statement from Athletic Director Dr. Paul Bryant, which expressed sorrow over the "loss" of Burnett. The release was subsequently shared on the university's website and social media channels. However, the statement was removed after additional information emerged from UAB Hospital, where Burnett had been receiving treatment.

In a follow-up statement, Alabama A&M Sports Information Director Brian Howard explained that the university had initially acted based on information provided by an immediate family member of Burnett. The family member had informed the university of the tragic occurrence, leading the institution to release the news of his death.

Howard clarified, "Upon hearing from a representative from UAB Hospital this afternoon, we learned that he remains alive. We express our immediate regret for disseminating false information, however, we hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition."

Medrick Burnett Jr. was injured during the Magic City Classic and was taken off the field on a stretcher before being transported to the hospital for further treatment. The freshman linebacker had played in seven games for the Bulldogs this season before the injury.

The initial false report sparked widespread concern and grief among the AAMU community, only to be followed by a wave of relief as news spread that Burnett is still alive and recovering.
